Potent greenhouse gas becomes water and nitrogen in the interior of SP

A chemical industry in the interior of São Paulo is transforming one of the villains of global warming into harmless elements to the environment. Nitrous oxide, a gas commonly used in anesthesia and known as “laughter gas”, is about 270 times more powerful than CO2 in terms of global warming.

Since 2006, the company’s unit in Paulinia has been converting nitrous oxide into water and nitrogen. The process uses a huge oven with extremely high temperature, the result of a significant technology investment.

Cutting -edge technology and environmental efficiency

Daniela Rattis Manique, representative of the company, explains: “Through a very strong temperature and a whole technology we develop, today we work with 99% operating rate. In our Paulínia unit, which produces more than one and a half million tons per year, we already have 95% neutrality”.

The environmental impact, according to the company, is equivalent to the removal of millions of cars from the streets for a year. In addition, the initiative goes beyond gas transformation, including an extensive reforestation program. The project also has a significant component of environmental restoration. More than 2 million native seedlings have already been planted, contributing to the capture of carbon and revitalization of local biodiversity.

“We are doing all the reforestation of the Atlantic Forest in our industrial area. We have 16 million square meters, of which only 15% are industrial area. The remainder, about 85%, is being reforested with the native forest of the region. The result is already visible in aerial photos, showing a significant transformation of the landscape in the last 20 years. New habitat. ”, Says the representative.
