PR: Federal deputy Matheus Laiola and police officers become defendants for kidnapping, false imprisonment and concussion

Federal deputy from Paraná Matheus Laiola (União Brasil) and three civil police officers became defendants for kidnapping, false imprisonment and concussion — extortion carried out by public servants.

The episode occurred in February 2019, when Laiola held the position of chief delegate at the Curitiba Environmental Protection Police Station.

The complaints, presented by the Public Ministry of Paraná (MP-PR) and accepted by the 4th Criminal Court of Curitiba, indicate that the four police officers had demanded R$50,000 from the owner of a gas station chain to release one of the employees of the company, unduly arrested.

According to the MP-PR, the man in question was arrested without legal justification during a police raid at the gas station located in Tijucas do Sul, in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, alleging irregularities in the establishment.

According to investigations carried out by the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco), the employee was only released after paying R$10,000 to the group of police officers.

In response to the accusations, the defense of deputy Matheus Laiola issued an official note, in which the parliamentarian vehemently denies the accusations.

According to the defense, the facts presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office do not match reality, since “deputy Matheus, in the exercise of his activity as a police chief, has always acted in a strictly legal and ethical manner, in defense of citizens and the animal cause .”

The statement says that Laiola received the news of the complaint with surprise, as he was not notified regarding the process, which is under judicial secrecy. The deputy’s defense also stated that it will prove the absence of any illegal practice during the course of the process.

The identity of the police officers reported to Laiola was not disclosed by the Public Ministry.
