Prato, the school dance that excludes gay couples

Two ministers intervened in the case of the ball Cicognini boarding school in Prato and the question is not yet closed. The Minister of Education and that of Equal Opportunities have had their say in the case that from the local news it has reached the national ones. Last week what was called Debutante’s Ball and which in seven days has become the New Year’s Ball excluded the students homosexuals. The complaint had come fromArcigay Prato-Pistoia that he had told of at least two pairs of male and female students who had not been allowed to attend the school assembly.

Arcigay made a formal request to the principal of the institute, Giovanna Nunziata, to include gay couples in the dance. The opening took place, but only from next year. At the weekend the interventions of the ministers. Patrizio Bianchi called the manager. The minister Bonetti he asked to «overcome the symbolism of a model that is now archived». And she added: “Any form of discrimination and asymmetry between women and men today must be canceled.”

The Board of Directors unanimously voted to open same-sex couples to participate in the dance. The teaching staff then changed the definition of the evening: dance open to all freely formed couples. In the vote, made with an online consultation between families and students, however, 50.1%, a minimum difference, chose to keep the traditional dance. “This is why I will reconvene the school bodies taking into account the opinion of the students,” explained the director Giovanna Nunziata. Interviewed by Republic he added: «Do not pass the concept that they are homophobic because they do not accept freely formed couples: in these days my students have been exposed to a media pillory. It takes time to change things ».

The decision is expected in days. The controversy and the stances are not over. Fabrizio Marrazzo Gay Party Spokesperson for LGBT +, Solidarity, Environmental and Liberal Rights: “We learned that the Dean made a request for an opinion to the students, where she asked if they wanted to have LGBT + couples at the dance. Such an opinion is unacceptable, it would be like asking the students if they want blacks and Jews among their classmates, if the majority say they no they are excluded? The school must protect minorities, not majorities that discriminate. In fact, out of 397 students, 50.1% said they were against it and now the principal wants to ban LGBT + couples from the school dance again ».
