Pre-Conclave Mass: Cardinal asks Pope to “awaken consciousness from all”

Cardinal Giovanni Re, dean of the Cardinal College, held the homily during the Mass known as “Pro Eligendo Romano Pontifice” on the morning of Wednesday (7).

“Let us pray that God gives the Church a Pope who knows how to better awaken the conscience of all and the moral and spiritual energies of today’s society, characterized by great technological progress, but tends to forget God,” Re said during the sermon.

Cardinal invoked the Holy Spirit to help voters “prepare to perform an act of higher human and ecclesial responsibility and to make a choice of exceptional importance.”

He continued to state that this morning’s Mass readings offered “a strong call to maintain the unity of the Church on the path drawn by Christ to the apostles.”

When the cardinals gathered in the Sistine chapel for the conclave this afternoon, he said-referring to the words of Pope John Paul II-that he expects “the imposing image of Jesus, the judge, of Michelangelo, remind everyone of the greatness of responsibility” to choose the next Pope.
