The president of Petrobras, José Mauro Ferreira Coelho said this Wednesday (18) that oil from the pre-salt layer causes less carbon emissions than the usual practice in the sector.
The declaration took place during participation in the opening of an event on the global carbon market, in the Botanical Garden, South Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
The company’s president recalled that Brazil has several energy sources available and is an energy powerhouse, and recalled that the country has 85% renewable sources in the electricity matrix and 25% in the transport matrix.
“Brazil is an energy powerhouse, with several sources available: wind, solar, we dominate the uranium cycle, hydroelectricity, biofuels, oil and gas. But it is also a benchmark in low-carbon energy. Our oil in the pre-salt matrix is among the lowest emitted in the world. It is produced with 40% less emissions than the global average”, said Ferreira Coelho.
Petrobras’ production and sales report for the first quarter of 2022 shows that production in the pre-salt was a record in the period, with more than two million barrels of oil per day, which corresponded to 72% of the state’s production in the period. In the last quarter of 2021, the index was 71%.
The president of the state-owned company reiterated the company’s commitment to the terms of the Paris Agreement, to reduce carbon emissions.
However, he highlighted that the energy transition will not occur in an accelerated way, and that fossil fuels have a contribution to make to society in the coming years.
“Brazil is currently in the position that the world wants to reach in 20, 30, 40 years. We are already leaders in this energy transition. The world will demand oil for decades. The transition will be slow. By producing low-cost, low-emission oil, Petrobras generates relevant foreign exchange to finance its own energy transition and Brazilian socioeconomic development,” said Ferreira Coelho.
In a statement released on Tuesday (17), Petrobras had already highlighted that pre-salt oil has a low sulfur content, which makes it less polluting. With this characteristic, it produces derivatives of superior quality, such as S-10 diesel and bunker, marine fuel.
The director highlighted that the energy transition changes the business environment for the company, which needs to improve its perception of the industrial ecosystem to take advantage of the changes, taking advantage of the vocations offered by Brazil.
“(It is) Creation of skills to take advantage of new business opportunities associated with the energy transition. This brings us challenges, but also opportunities. Analysis of new businesses contributing to the company’s long-term sustainability. An example is the production of advanced biofuels, something foreseen in our strategic planning. Production of more modern fuels such as aviation biokerosene”, concluded the company’s president, during the event.
In the communiqué distributed the day before, the company also highlighted that the characteristics of the Brazilian pre-salt make it present what it called a high yield of medium derivatives.
A condition that favors the production of aviation kerosene, a fuel with greater added value. The characteristics would also be, according to Petrobras, favorable for the production of more derivatives with less oil.
