Pregnant woman who survived attack on maternity hospital in Ukrainian city gives birth

A pregnant woman whose rescue from a maternity hospital in the city of Mariupol after an attack that Ukraine attributes to Russia this week was captured in a photo that went viral, gave birth to a baby girl, confirmed her family to CNN.

Mariana Vishegirskaya was among several women at the Mariupol maternity ward who survived an alleged bombing.

She gave birth to her baby girl at another hospital on Thursday, her aunt Tatiana Liubchenko said. “According to our conversations in this [sexta-feira] in the morning, Marianna is fine, and they named her daughter Veronica,” he says.

“They called around 10 am [da sexta-feira]. On Thursday night, she gave birth at 10:30 pm and the baby was born healthy and weighing around 3 kilos, but there was no electricity,” Liubchenko said.

Vishegirskaya’s aunt worries about the deteriorating conditions of the population in the besieged city of Mariupol.

“But we have received information that people’s water and food are running out and we are very worried, because the green corridor is not open and the Russians do not allow it, the food does not arrive. And it’s very cold there now and they can’t get warm. I think she gave birth in the second largest hospital in Mariupol,” added Liubchenko.

“I hope that sufficient conditions are provided for the baby to remain healthy,” he said. The family tried calling Vishegirskaya back throughout the day, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Russian version

Hours before the bombing condemned by the Ukrainian government, the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of RussiaMaria Zakharova, accused Ukraine of establishing combat positions in the hospital region and other affected areas.

In a statement, Zakharova said that “in Mariupol, Ukrainian national battalions are expelling staff and patients from the maternity ward, and equipping combat positions.”

Russian spokeswoman still stated that there were “several videos refuting the fake Ukrainian versions, confirming that Kiev’s crimes against its own citizens are rife and are in the public domain.”
