A neonatal doctor who works at a hospital in the south of the Gaza Strip told CNN on Monday (23) that premature babies who depend on oxygen supplies will die if fuel is not urgently delivered to the enclave.
Hatem Edhair, head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Nasser Medical Complex, said all non-emergency facilities were turned off, as were lights and air conditioning.
More fuel is needed to power the vital equipment that keeps children alive, such as ventilators, oxygen supply, monitors and sterilization, he said.
Israel has not allowed fuel into the Gaza Strip since it ordered a “total siege” of the territory on October 9, following terrorist attacks by the racially Islamic group Hamas against Israeli civilians.
Edhair said 11 babies are in his neonatal intensive care unit, up from eight as of Monday morning. Admission rates continue to rise as residents of the northern Gaza Strip flee south.
