Damascus will need time to prepare a national dialogue conference to ensure that all sections of Syrian society are represented, Syrian Foreign Minister Assad al-Shibani said today. The aim of the conference will be to chart a new course for the country after the overthrow of the Assad regime by Islamist rebels. Bashar al-Assad, whose family ruled Syria for 54 years, found refuge in Russia. “We will take our time with regard to the national dialogue conference, so that we have the possibility to set up a preparatory committee, which will facilitate the overall representation of all social groups and local authorities in Syria,” said Assad al Shibani. Diplomats who visited Syria in the previous days had advised the country’s new leadership not to rush to organize the conference in order to increase its chances of success. Source: RES
