US President Joe Biden today called on Iraqi political leaders to start a “national dialogue” to resolve the current political crisis.
This call was made on the occasion of the telephone conversation that the American president had with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mustafa al-Kazimi, as announced by the White House.
The two leaders “welcomed the return of safety to the streets” and jointly called for a commitment by Iraqi leaders to engage in national dialogue to find a solution “within the Constitution and laws” of Iraq.
According to the White House statement, Biden “praised the leadership shown by Prime Minister Khadimi” during the escalating tension and violence earlier in the week. The two leaders agreed to stay in touch in the coming weeks.
Baghdad saw its worst riots in years in the Iraqi capital on Monday as rival Shiite organizations clashed after powerful Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr announced his retirement from politics.
