Argentine President Alberto Fernández declared this Friday (2) a national holiday in solidarity with Vice President Cristina Kirchner, who was attacked at the door of her home in Buenos Aires, around 9 pm on Thursday (1). ).

“May this shock and repudiation that this fact generates in us become a permanent commitment to eradicate hatred and violence from life in democracy. That’s why I’ve arranged for tomorrow to be declared a national holiday, so that in peace and harmony the Argentine people can express themselves in defense of life, democracy and in solidarity with our vice president,” said Fernández.

“The Argentine people want to live in democracy and in peace, and our government is firmly committed to working every day to achieve this,” he continued.

According to the Argentine Federal Police, a Brazilian man, identified as Fernando André Sabag Montiel, 35, was detained. He is named by the police as the author of the shooting attempt. Her father is Chilean and her mother Argentine, according to local police.

According to the president, the weapon, a .380 pistol, had five projectiles and did not fire despite having been fired.

“Dear Argentine people. Today, shortly after 9 pm, a man made an attempt on the life of the nation’s current vice president and twice constitutional president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. This fact is extremely serious. It is the most serious thing that has happened since we regained our democracy.

In the frame of a massive presence of people and in front of the vice president’s house, a man pointed a firearm at her head and fired the trigger. Cristina is still alive for a reason that has yet to be technically confirmed. The gun, which had five bullets, did not fire despite being fired.

This reality moves the entire Argentine people and, in particular, those of us who are his colleagues and who embrace it in solidarity, with all our love. This attack deserves the most energetic repudiation of the entire Argentine society. From all political sectors. Of all the men and women of the republic, because these facts affect our democracy.

We are obliged to recover the democratic coexistence that was broken by the hate speech that spread through different political, judicial and media spaces of Argentine society. We can feel. We can have deep differences. But in a democratic society, hate speech cannot occur, because it breeds violence.

And there is no possibility that violence can coexist with democracy. We are facing a fact of extreme institutional and human gravity. Our vice president was attacked and social peace was (incomprehensible).

Argentina cannot waste another minute, there is no time. It is necessary to banish violence and hatred from political and media discourse, and from our life in society. I call on each of the Argentine men and women. To all political and social leaders. To the media and society in general, to reject any form of violence.

We need to isolate, not validate and repudiate the disqualifying, stigmatizing and offensive words that only divide and confront us. I contacted the judge who is investigating what happened. I asked him to quickly clarify the responsibilities and the facts.

I also asked you to guarantee the life of the accused who is being held today. May this shock and repudiation that this fact generates in us become a permanent commitment to eradicate hatred and violence from life in democracy. That’s why I arranged for tomorrow to be declared a national holiday, so that in peace and harmony the Argentine people can express themselves in defense of life, democracy and in solidarity with our vice president.

The Argentine people want to live in democracy and in peace, and our government is firmly committed to working every day to achieve this. Goodnight.”
