President of Bolivia denounces “irregular mobilization” of Army units

The President of Bolivia, Luis Arce, “denounced the irregular mobilization” of some units of the country’s Army this Wednesday (26) in a publication on X.

He added that democracy must be respected.

State news agency ABI reported that tanks are being positioned in and around Plaza Murillo, a square in the capital La Paz where the offices of the Executive and Legislative branches are located.

According to ABI, the military mobilization began around 2:30 pm, local time.

A witness from the Reuters news agency saw a military vehicle reaching the entrance to the National Palace and soldiers entering the building.

A CNN is trying to contact the Bolivian government for comment.

Evo Morales denounces “coup d’état”

Former president Evo Morales, also through social media, accused the troops of planning a coup d’état under the command of General Juan José Zuniga.

He called for “national mobilization to defend democracy”.

“We will not allow the Armed Forces to violate democracy and intimidate the people”, he concluded.

General Juan Jose Zuniga told a local TV station, according to Reuters, that “the three heads of the Armed Forces came to express our dismay. There will be a new cabinet of ministers, things will certainly change, but our country cannot continue like this any longer.”

Organization of American States condemns movement

The secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, condemned the situation in Bolivia, sending solidarity to Luis Arce.

“The Army must submit to the legitimately elected civil power, he warned.

Almagro also highlighted that “any violation of the legitimate constitutional order will not be tolerated
