The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, published on Thursday (23) a new decree ordering the Armed Forces to take control of firearms, ammunition, explosives and accessories in all authorized routes for entry into prisons. from the country.
The measure adds to the order that the governor issued on February 20 for the military to control the interior of prisons, where they will be “until necessary”, said the head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, Jaime Vela.
The decree argues that in the April popular consultation a vast majority of citizens answered “Yes” to question 6: “Do you agree that the Armed Forces carry out permanent control of weapons, ammunition, explosives and accessories on routes, paths, roads and corridors authorized to enter social rehabilitation centers?”
Based on this result, the Ecuadorian president ordered the country's forces to take on a new arms control task.
According to the decree, the forces must act together with the National Police and the National System of Social Rehabilitation and Comprehensive Care for Adolescent Offenders.
The measure is published on the date that Noboa completes six months of service and just one day after he declared a state of emergency in seven provinces as a measure to combat organizations he considers narco-terrorists.
On January 9, the government issued a decree still in force regarding the existence of an internal armed conflict in Ecuador and designated 22 organized crime groups as terrorists.
This Friday (24), Noboa will give its first report to the nation.
