Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said on Saturday (30) that the country’s Parliament is illegitimate following an election held in October and that she does not intend to leave her post when her term ends in December.
During a meeting, Zourabichvili said that the Presidency remains the country’s only legitimate institution. She called the election a “sham” and a “Russian special operation.”
The comment came amid a wave of protests in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, and other cities.
Tomorrow’s meeting of the Parliament is unconstitutional: 1/massive electoral fraud has undermined its legitimacy.
2/ I refused to call the 1st session and the Constitution does not recognize anyone to act as substitute.
3/my appeal to the Constitutional court is pending.— Salome Zourabichvili (@Zourabichvili_S) November 24, 2024
Popular mobilization began after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced this week that Georgia had abandoned European Union accession negotiations.
On Friday (29), more than 100 people were arrested during protests in the capital Tbilisi following the prime minister’s statement. President Zourabichvili, who is pro-West and in favor of negotiations, stated that the police “attacked journalists and political leaders”.
Opponents accuse the ruling Georgian Dream party of being pro-Russia and of having manipulated the parliamentary elections for its own benefit.
