President of Israel: ceasefire should guarantee safety for residents of the north of the country

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said the Lebanon ceasefire agreement needs to guarantee the safety of residents in northern Israel.

“The emerging arrangement will have to pass a single test – ensuring complete safety for all northern residents,” he posted on X on Tuesday.

“As a nation, we are determined to ensure the safety of all residents of Israel, in the north and south, and elsewhere, and to work towards the full rehabilitation of the communities and settlements that have been affected,” said Herzog.

The Israeli president said that while the ceasefire was “correct and important,” Israel would protect its citizens “in any way.”

Agreement drawn up by the USA

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Tuesday (26) that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, drawn up by the USA, will be implemented from 11pm Brasília time (4am local time ). The truce is expected to last 60 days.

Biden said the parties accepted a proposal to “end the devastating conflict between Israel and Lebanon.” The president announced the deal as “good news” when speaking in the White House Rose Garden.

“According to the agreement reached today, with effect at 4am tomorrow local time, the fighting on the Lebanese-Israeli border will end,” the president said.

“This was intended to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. What remains of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations will not be allowed,” he added. According to Biden, the Lebanese army will take control of its own territory once again.

“Over the next 60 days, Israel will gradually withdraw its remaining forces and civilians – civilians on both sides will soon be able to safely return to their communities and begin rebuilding their homes,” Biden said.

The Democrat sought to reiterate that Israel “retains the right to self-defense” if Hezbollah “or anyone else” breaks the newly announced agreement.

“Let me be clear: if Hezbollah or anyone else breaks the agreement and poses a direct threat to Israel, then Israel retains the right to self-defense in accordance with international law.”
