The defense of the president of the organized fans Mancha Alviverde, Jorge Luiz Sampaio Santos, reported that he resigned from his position this Sunday (8) and will surrender to the São Paulo Civil Police in the coming days.
Jorge has been considered a fugitive since the beginning of November. He is suspected of participating in the ambush carried out by Mancha against members of the Blue Mafia organized Cruzeiro fans, on October 27th. In the confrontation, a Cruzeiro fan died and 17 other people were injured.
In the statement released by the defense, the now former president of the Palmeiras organization states that he is “absolutely at the disposal of the Judiciary and informs that he will voluntarily surrender to the authorities, despite recognizing the difficulty of this decision”.
According to his lawyers, he must appear at the police station by next Sunday (15).
“Since becoming aware of the accusations, Jorge and his family have expressed dismay and sought to understand the allegations made against them. He claims to believe in the Judiciary and its ability to guarantee his physical integrity, security and fundamental rights, as is the duty of the State. It also reiterates that the suspicions raised by the Civil Police do not correspond to reality and that it will exercise its defense with determination and confidence that everything will be clarified”, completes the note.
Jorge held the position of president of Palmeiras’ main fan organization for the last three years. “My removal is necessary not only to preserve my family, but also so that I can dedicate myself exclusively to my defense and prove my innocence”, he states, still in the note.
Last Tuesday (3), an operation by the São Paulo Civil Police arrested ten members of Mancha Verde. Previously, two other fans had already been arrested. The first suspect, Alekssander Ricardo Tancredi, aged 30, was arrested on November 1st, while the second suspect was arrested on November 26th, in Mairiporã, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.
Ambush against Cruzeiro fans
The fans of Mancha Verde, an organized supporter of Palmeiras, ambushed the fans of Máfia Azul, an organized supporter of Cruzeiro.
The fight between the fans occurred on the morning of October 27th, on the Fernão Dias highway, at kilometer 65, in Mairiporã (SP).
The organized fans of the Minas Gerais team were returning from Curitiba, after following the team in a game valid for the Brazilian Championship, when they were surprised by the fans of the São Paulo team. The Federal Highway Police (PRF) reported that the confrontation would involve more than 100 members of the two groups.
The incident left 17 people injured and led to the death of motorcycle courier José Victor Miranda, a 30-year-old Cruzeiro fan, resident of Sete Lagoas (MG).
According to witnesses, José was forcibly removed from the bus and attacked by members of Palmeiras’ Mancha Verde fans. He was beaten, but it was also reported that there were burns on his body. He left a 10-year-old son.
