President of Peru calls general elections for 2026

Peru President Dina Boluarte has called for general elections to April 12, 2026, saying that he expects the call to “end a period of instability” that the country has experienced in recent years.

“We hope, for the sake of Peru, that the 2026 elections not only allow our citizens to exercise the right to vote, but also end the period of instability that led Peru to have six presidents in recent years,” she said.

Boluarte had until next month to summon the elections, according to a schedule proposed by the National Elections Council, which also stipulated that the vote was held on April 12, 2026.

The announcement occurs amid a security crisis in Peru that resulted in the state of emergency statement in the Peruvian capital and the province of Callao.

The statement came after the murder of a well -known musician from Cumbia on March 16, which triggered protests and led the Peruvian Congress to censor the interior minister Juan José Santivañez for his way of dealing with the wave of insecurity.

The country has also undergone recent political crises that resulted in Peru having six presidents in the last seven years.

In 2022, Dina Boluarte became the first woman president of Peru after her predecessor Pedro Castillo was arrested and accused by legislators for trying to dissolve the legislative body and install an emergency government.

Boluarte, which is widely criticized in Peru, said on Tuesday (25) that he expects next year’s elections to “open a distension scenario” to the country.

“The government that Lidero is committed to maintaining absolute neutrality and impartiality so that the results of this electoral process are unquestionable and fully reflect the popular will expressed at the polls,” he said, who also assured that the electoral agencies will have the necessary resources to fulfill their duties.

Boluarte delivered the message to the government’s palace with the heads of the country’s electoral institutions.

Investigation and complaint against president

Last year, prosecutors opened an investigation into Boluarte for alleged illicit enrichment and fails to declare assets after local media La Encrona determined that she had at least 14 luxury clocks.

She denied any irregularity, stating that all she had was the result of her hard work.

In June, two human rights groups filed a complaint to the International Criminal Court accusing Boluarte and members of his government of crimes against humanity with the deaths of 49 people during the Peruvian week protest movement in 2022 and 2023.

The president denied any personal responsibility on the subject, while former Prime Minister Alberto Otarola reported that the government’s response to protests defended the “right to peace and calm” of Peruvians.
