President of Peru celebrates new Pope “Peruvian”: “20 years of service here”

The Government of Peru released, on Thursday (8), a statement by President Dina Boluarte, congratulating Robert Prevost for his election as the new Pope Leo XIV.

In the message, Boluarte stressed the Peruvian nationality of Prevost, which acted as bishop in the diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, between 2014 and 2023.

“Today we celebrate a historic moment for Peru and the world: the election of cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a Peruvian citizen for election and heart as the new Pope Leo XIV,” celebrated the president.

“This moment marks not only the first time that an American [sic] It ascends to the throne of St. Peter, but also the first occasion when a Peruvian, with more than 20 years of service in our land, leads the Catholic Church as a Pontiff. In the name of the government and the people of Peru, we express our immense joy and send our greetings and a fraternal hug to their holiness, Leo XIV. ”

Who is the new Pope Robert Prevost?

Robert Prevost is 69 years old and born in Chicago, Illinois. He lived as a missionary in Peru from 2014 to 2023, where he spent most of his time in the city of Trujillo and was later appointed Bishop of Chiclayo. The Pope has been Peruvian citizenship since 2015.

Before becoming the ultimate church leader, Predost said in an interview with Vatican News that he still considers himself a missionary. “My vocation, like every Christian, is being a missionary, proclaiming the gospel wherever it is.”

After the missionary experience in South America, Prevost led a Vatican office for episcopal nominations.
