The Attorney General of Peru, Daniel Soria. opened a preliminary investigation against the country’s president, Pedro Castillo, on charges of conspiracy and influence peddling in cases related to government contracts to carry out public works.
The prosecutor announced the inquiry into Castillo because of meetings the president held with representatives of companies competing for concessions to build a bridge in the Amazon region and for another for the sale of fuel to state-owned Petroperu, according to a note from the prosecutor’s office on Twitter.
According to the statement, the president would have made an “improper intervention” in the bidding process.
Castillo, whose popularity quickly plummeted after he came to power in late July, rejects the allegations. He says they are orchestrated by his opponents, who want to bring him down.
The government’s Press Secretariat was not immediately available for comment. Five former Peruvian presidents have been formally investigated for corruption in recent years.
Presidents are immune from prosecution during their five-year term in the country, but they can be investigated.
