Poland president Andrzej Duda asked the United States to transfer nuclear weapons to his territory as an impediment against future aggressions from Russia, the Financial Times said on Thursday (13).
Duda also told the newspaper that he had recently discussed the proposal with US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg.
Poland has previously said that it would be ready to host US weapons under a nuclear weapon sharing program. Polish legislators also expressed interest more recently in an idea launched by France President Emmanuel Macron that Paris’s nuclear umbrella could be extended to its European allies.
“The NATO borders [Organização do Tratado do Atlântico Norte] They moved to the east in 1999, so 26 years later there should also be a change in the NATO infrastructure to the east. For me, this is obvious, ”Duda said in an interview.
It would be safer if these weapons were already in the country, he added.
Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a Duda’s political opponent, reacted to the president’s statements and said he thought it better to address such questions discreetly than in media interviews, although he added that he believed the president had good intentions.
“We must formulate certain expectations … publicly when we are sure, or reasons to be convinced, that such appeals or calls will be heard and that the recipient, in this case the US Administration, President Trump, is prepared for a positive response,” Tusk told reporters.
Galvanized by the invasion of neighboring Ukraine by Russia three years ago, Poland now spends a higher proportion of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in defense than any other NATO member, including the United States.
Last year, Poland’s defense spending reached 4.1% of GDP, according to NATO estimates, and plans to reach 4.7% this year. Duda suggested consecrating expenses with defense of at least 4% of GDP in the Polish Constitution.
