President of Romania announces resignation in the midst of attempting Impachment

Romania President Klaus Iohannis resigned on Monday as the far-right parliamentary parties of the opposition planned their impeachment.

The Member State of the European Union and NATO, which borders Ukraine, plunged into institutional chaos last year when the little known right-wing critic of NATO, Calin Georgescu, won the first round of a presidential election.

After accusations of Russian interference – denied by Moscow – the Romania Superior Court annulled the entire election.

With the two election shifts scheduled for May 4 and 18, the Romania Superior Court said that Iohannis, whose second and last term expired on December 21, would remain until his successor was elected.

But in January, three far -right opposition parties, which control about 35% of the seats in Parliament, entered an impeachment motion of Iohannis.

With the profoundly unpopular voting and iohannis motion, analysts said some legislators of the main pro-European parties could give the extreme right impeachment initiative the necessary majority.

“The request will have consequences both internally and abroad,” Iohannis told reporters. “To save the Romania of this negative and meaningless crisis… I am resigning to the position of President.”

Senate President Ilie Bolojan, leader of the Liberal Party, a member of the governing coalition, will assume as interim president with limited powers until the election.

The three far -right groups, whose support has increased since Georgescu’s surprising victory, used their campaign against Iohannis as an excuse for organizing protests and seizing the political agenda.
