President of the European Commission celebrates vote: “the center remains”

Despite a wave of support for far-right parties during the European Parliament elections, which ended on Sunday (9), the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, said that the final poll continues to be a success for the dominant political current on the continent.

“There remains a majority in the center for a strong Europe – and this is crucial for stability. In other words, the center remains,” Von der Leyen said in a speech in Brussels late on Sunday.

The expectation is that Von der Leyen’s European People’s Party (EPP) will continue to be the largest political group in the European Parliament, with 189 seats.

“But it is also true that the extremes of the left and right gained support, and that is why the result comes with great responsibility for the parties in the center. We may differ on individual points, but we all have an interest in stability and we all want a strong and effective Europe,” she said.

Roberta Metsola, president of the European Parliament, also said that the exit poll shows that “the constructive and pro-European center remained”.
