The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said this Thursday (19) that the risk of the war between Israel and Hamas spilling over into other parts of the region is “real” and highlighted the need to reinforce sanctions on Iran, which , according to her, would be providing supplies to the radical Islamic group.
Von der Leyen also said at the Hudson Institute in Washington that dialogue between Israel and its neighbors needs to continue. “We saw Arab streets fill with anger across the region. Therefore, the risk of a regional spillover is real,” he said.
Israel is at war with Hamas in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip after the extremist group killed thousands of people in a surprise attack on Israel on October 7.
The number of victims of Israeli attacks on Gaza has also been rising by the thousands, in addition to those injured, according to Palestinian health officials.
Israel is also in conflict with Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon.
“Iran, patron of Hamas, only wants to fuel the fire of chaos. Russia, Iran’s wartime client, is watching carefully. Russia and Hamas are similar,” said the EU leader.
Von der Leyen denounced the “evil role that Iran plays behind the scenes”, adding that, “without a doubt”, Iran supplied 93% of the weapons used by Hamas.
She said it was vital to continue sanctions on Iran, expand them and crack down on evasion of them: “That we have to intensify is unquestionable.”
