The President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, canceled a meeting with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, following the attack on the Baptist Al-Ahli Hospital, in the northern region of Gaza City this Tuesday (17), according to Palestinian officials .
The decision comes on the eve of the US president’s high-risk visit to the Middle East region, which has been at war since the early hours of October 7.
Biden’s visit to Israel was confirmed on Monday (16) by US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken.
Abbas is traveling to Ramallah in the West Bank and has called an urgent meeting of the Palestinian leadership for this evening.
Palestinian officials said between 200 and 300 people were killed in an Israeli attack, citing preliminary estimates.
The Israeli government denies responsibility for the attack and blames Islamic Jihad.
In a statement, signed by the spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF, its acronym in English, FDI in Portuguese), the Israeli government states that “based on the analysis of the IDF’s operational systems, a barrage of enemy rockets was launched towards Israel who passed close to the hospital when it was hit.”
According to Reuters, the spokesman for Palestinian Islamic Jihad denied that the group was responsible for the attack.
