President of Ukraine says group planned “coup” against him in December

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday (26) that a group of Ukrainians and Russians planned a coup against him in early December.

At a press conference, Zelensky said the coup was scheduled for December 1 or 2, and that there is an audio exchanged between Ukrainian and Russian conspirators discussing the plan.

The Kremlin denied Zelensky’s allegations that the country was involved in the case.

“Russia never had any plans to get involved in anything like this. In general, Russia never gets involved in this kind of situation,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a virtual conference with journalists on Friday.

Border maneuvers

Western officials have for weeks expressed growing concern over Moscow’s military activities on the Ukrainian border, with the United States considering imposing sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine.

“We don’t know what President Putin’s intentions are, but we know what happened in the past,” Anthony Blinken, US secretary of state, said during a trip to Senegal last week.

He referred to Russian military incursions, known or not, into neighboring countries.

The head of the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Agency, Brigadier General Kyrylo Budanov, told the US newspaper Military Times that Russia was increasing the number of troops and the level of its weapons on the Crimean peninsula in preparation for an offensive that could take place any time.

The Kremlin, for its part, has repeatedly asserted that Russia has no plans to invade Ukraine, accusing Western countries of “hysteria” over the issue.
