Presidential candidates talk about agreement with the US for the use of the Alcântara base

Approved in Congress in 2019, the agreement between Brazil and the US for the use of the Alcântara space center, in Maranhão, was enacted by the government in 2020, with commercial operation expected to begin in 2022.

According to the federal government, the agreement helps to make the Alcântara Space Center viable for launching space objects, which would generate foreign exchange for the development of the Brazilian Space Program. Another argument is that patents for most of the technological components of objects in the aerospace industry originate in the United States.

The agreement prohibits the launch of spacecraft or launch vehicles from countries with sanctions established by the United Nations Security Council or governments that have supported acts of international terrorism.

THE CNN asked the pre-candidates for the Presidency of the Republic what they think about the agreement with the US for the use of the Alcântara center.

Felipe d’Avila (New):

Alcântara is one of the best bases in the world for launching rockets and satellites. Undoubtedly, it should be used. The agreement is also a good opportunity for us to bring new technologies here. It’s positive for the country.

Roberto Jefferson (PTB):

The main criticism at the time of the agreement was the technological development part of propulsion vehicles. Since then, something called Elon Musk has happened, which has turned the page on the subject.

I think that, with this gigantic evolution, the agreement became something much better, because it brought our base back to the satellite launch market at a time when the activity is going through a period of growth.

Vera Lucia (PSTU):
