Presidential elections in Brazil: Lula widens the gap with Bolsonaro

Lula is gaining ground again in the voting intentions in view of the presidential elections that will be held in October in Brazil, he can even win them from the first round, indicated a poll that was published yesterday, Thursday.

According to the Datafolha Institute, 48% of Brazilians expressed their intention to vote for center-left former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, while 27% voted for far-right incumbent Bolsonaro.

Lula thus increases his lead to 21 percentage points in view of the first round. A previous poll by the same reporting institute, published on March 24, found him 17 points behind Mr Bolsonaro.

However, the two surveys are different, as the one in March predicted the scenario of participation of other candidates, some of whom have since withdrawn from the race.

At the end of April, a poll by the PoderData Institute, on the other hand, showed that Mr Bolsonaru (36%) was drastically reducing the gap with the former president (41%).

On the contrary, according to the poll published yesterday, the former president (2003-2010) is going to win from the first round, with 54% against 30% of his opponent, if the invalid and the white ones are removed, if only the valid ones are taken into account. ballots.

In the event of a run-off, the 76-year-old historical leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) will beat 67-year-old Bolsonaro by 25 points (58% vs. 33%), three more than expected in March.

The poll is the first to be launched after former corruption judge Sergio Mourou – Bolsonaro’s former justice minister – and former center-right governor in Sao Paulo, Zuaro, were nominated.

In third place is the center-left candidate Siro Gomes (7%). Senator Simoni Tembet and centrist Andre Zannon share fourth and fifth place (2%).

The Datafolia poll shows that the fact that there is no “improvement” in the state of the economy could create a “positive trend for Lula”, said political analyst Creomar de Souza.

Moreover, the analyst added speaking to the French Agency, Mr. Bolsonarou finds it more difficult than his opponent to address the voters who are not his followers.

The Datafolia poll was conducted the day before yesterday, Wednesday and yesterday, Thursday, in 181 cities in Brazil; it has a statistical error margin of ± 2%.
