Presidential Medals of Freedom awarded: Denzel Washington absent due to COVID

It was held on White House the US Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony. Denzel Washington was absent because he tested positive for COVID-19.

US President Joe Biden spoke about the actor’s absence during the ceremony in the East Room of the White House.

“There is one man who could not be here today, but wanted to be: Mr denzel washington, one of our greatest actors in American history. Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Tony Awards, (and) widespread recognition from audiences and peers around the world. He couldn’t be here with us today, but I will give him this award later when he can come here,” he explained.

At the ceremony, Biden delivered a speech addressing those who received the medals, “to an outstanding group of Americans,” as he explained.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is America’s highest civilian honor and is awarded once a year. In addition to Denzel Washington, there were 16 other honorees, including gymnast Simone Biles, soccer player Megan Rapinoe, the late senator John McCain and civil rights activist Dianne Nash.
