One of the issues that is in focus after his victory Recep Tayyip Erdogan at Turkish electionsis its inclusion Sweden in the NATO. Its president Turkey has “blocked” the process by accusing Stockholm of supporting Kurdish separatists, as well as dissidents, whom it describes as “terrorists”.
Ahead of the NATO Summit in July in Vilnius, Lithuania, the debate has heated up. The US and Alliance leadership are pressing Ankara to lift the vetowhile Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues the “Turkish bargains” expecting significant returns, which among other things related to US weapons programs and F-16 fighter jets.
“Since we decided to invite Sweden to become a member, I have been in close and continuous contact with the political leadership in Ankara. We also have a standing mechanism that also meets regularly,” he said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, from Norway where the informal meeting of the Alliance’s foreign ministers was held and added:
“In Turkey there was the pre-election period, the contacts were not very close and dense during this process, but now that the elections are over I think it is important to restart the dialogue and the process.”
Jens Stoltenberg claimed that Turkey supports Sweden’s accession, while Hungary has committed in this direction in the past, and therefore, he believes that both countries will eventually give their approval.
It is noted that NATO Secretary General is expected to travel to Ankara on Saturday to attend the inauguration of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and it is possible that there will be discussions on the sidelines of the events.
However, Turkey seems to be insisting on its position for the time being. “At the meeting of NATO foreign ministers today in Oslo there was strong support from member states for Sweden’s candidacy and a clear message to Turkey and Hungary to begin the ratification of Sweden’s membership in NATO,” he wrote in his post. Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom.
