The European Parliament is expected to ask former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to be blacklisted if he does not resign from the post of Russian state oil minister, Rosneft.
The draft resolution, which also applies to Karin Kneissl, the former Austrian Foreign Minister under the Kurtz government, is supported by the four largest political groups in plenary, but is still subject to minor changes.
Critics have blamed Schroeder, who as chancellor had financed the construction of more gas pipelines, for deepening Germany’s energy dependence on a neighbor who is now hostile.
“The European Parliament points out that former politicians have recently resigned from their positions in Russian companies and strongly urges others, such as Karin Kneissl and Gerhard Schroeder, to do the same,” the draft document said.
The text is expected to be adopted later today. It is not binding, but it represents significant pressure on the EU to take action against Europeans deemed to be close to the Kremlin.
The EU has so far agreed to freeze the assets of hundreds of Kremlin-linked oligarchs and officials as part of anti-Russian crackdown on Ukraine, but has avoided directly targeting Europeans holding top jobs in Russian companies. which are considered to support the war in Ukraine.
The European Parliament is urging “the list of people targeted by EU sanctions to be extended to European board members of large Russian companies and to politicians who continue to receive Russian funds”.
