The event was scheduled to take place between April 30 and May 9, but was suspended due to Pope Francis’ death. Prevost was one of the main guests and would be responsible for preaching the retreat to the Brazilian bishops in the first two days of the meeting.

The General Assembly of Bishops takes place every year. Cardinals, archbishops, diocesan bishops, auxiliaries and coadjutors, as well as the Emeritus bishops and diocesan administrators gather for a period of reflection.

According to the CNBB, the topics debated are “pastoral, spiritual and temporal matters of those concerning the mission of the Church and emerging problems concerning people and society, always from the perspective of evangelization.”

Who is the new Pope?

Robert Prevost is 69 years old and born in Chicago, Illinois. He lived as a missionary in Peru from 2014 to 2023, where he spent most of his time in the city of Trujillo and was later appointed bishop of Chiclayo. The Pope has been Peruvian citizenship since 2015.

Before becoming the ultimate church leader, Predost said in an interview with Vatican News that he still considers himself a missionary. “My vocation, like every Christian, is being a missionary, proclaiming the gospel wherever it is.”

After the missionary experience in South America, Prevost led a Vatican office for episcopal nominations.
