PRF arrests driver who trafficked endangered animals in Porto Velho (RO)

The Federal Highway Police (PRF) rescued endangered wild animals this Wednesday (7), including 8 golden lion tamarins and 3 black-tufted marmosets.

The animals were seized on BR-364, in the capital Porto Velho (RO).

According to the PRF, during an inspection command, the agents saw a vehicle traveling below the speed limit of the others, and, upon approaching, the police officers noticed the presence of cages in the back seat and heard animal sounds coming from inside the car.

The driver appeared very nervous when asked what he was transporting and confessed to transporting wild animals considered rare and endangered. He also reported that he had picked up the animals in Belo Horizonte (MG) and would deliver them to Pacaraima (RR). According to him, he would receive around R$25,000 for the service.

During the inspection of the vehicle, 11 wild animals were found, which were in three cages, in inadequate conditions, without food or water, very scared and with clear signs of mistreatment.

The animals were sent to IBAMA’s Wildlife Triage Center (CETAS).

The driver was sent to the Federal Police and will be charged with the crimes of qualified animal trafficking, as the animals are threatened with extinction, mistreatment and receiving stolen animals as a result of transporting livestock (i.e., animals that move by themselves).
