“Prices in the markets have tripled. There is no more gas”, say Brazilians in Gaza

With no prospect of leaving the Gaza Strip, Brazilians are experiencing the worsening of the humanitarian crisis triggered by the conflict between Israel and Hamas that began on October 7.

Despite Brazil sending financial resources, families report the difficulty of purchasing food and water. In the precarious markets in southern Gaza, the demand for supplies has caused prices to triple. There is also no gas for cooking anymore.

“Prices have tripled due to overcrowding and the siege of the population in the south of the Gaza Strip. This makes it difficult to obtain our resources. Now we are facing a lack of gas. We are living the worst days of our lives. My daughter Aileen, 8 months old, needs milk and there is no way to get it,” says Ramadan Abdou, who is in Khan Yunis.

With the difficulty of directly sending food and water to Brazilians, the Brazilian Representation in Palestine began making bank transfers to families awaiting repatriation.

“They (Brazilian Representation) will send us resources, but it is very difficult to find them. Maybe we’ll go back to drinking salt water,” said Hasan Rabee.

With the resources received, the Palestinian naturalized Brazilian went to the market to buy French fries for his two daughters aged 3 and 5.

“Unfortunately, there isn’t much on the market. Water does not exist. There is no flour and, if you can find it, it costs three times as much,” he reports. “Our gas ran out today. You can’t cook. Only canned food,” Rabee said.

In a video recorded this Tuesday (24), Rabee, who has been reporting daily from Gaza, said that he will complete 18 days without power at home.

“We have been without electricity for 18 days. And running water doesn’t exist, it’s not enough. Such fresh water is very difficult to find. You have to carry a gallon and walk a lot to find it. Unfortunately, very difficult,” said Hasan Rabee.

Protection for Brazilians in Gaza

Assistance to Brazilians in Gaza is provided by the Palestine Representation team, which is divided into two teams. One – made up of Brazilian diplomats – is in Jerusalem taking care of strategy and security.

The other – made up of Brazilian-Palestinians and Palestinians – is in Ramallah, in the West Bank, responsible for operational, administrative and consular arrangements.

The work is divided into three parts: saving Brazilians from the combat zone; relieve and protect Brazilians from the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and carry out repatriation through the opening of the Rafah crossing.

The Brazilian Representation in Palestine maintains contact with Brazilians in Gaza through a WhatsApp group. The Brazilian government has been sending money so that the group can buy food, water and medicine.
