Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face vote of no confidence in Parliament

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will face a vote of no confidence on Monday, triggered by disgruntled lawmakers in his own party.

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee, said in a statement that the number of Conservative Party lawmakers calling for a vote had reached the required threshold of 54 lawmakers. Voting is scheduled to take place between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm local time (between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm Brasília time).

Johnson’s leadership has been shaken by the so-called “Partygate” scandal, with months of allegations of parties and gatherings at his government headquarters during various stages of lockdown during the pandemic eroding public confidence. The prime minister has also been criticized for his response to high inflation.

The prime minister’s approval ratings have been falling, with sentiment growing among some parts of his Conservative Party that Johnson is becoming passive to the problems. The party faces two difficult parliamentary elections later this month.

The PA news agency quoted a Downing Street spokesperson as saying that Johnson “welcomes the opportunity to present his case to lawmakers.”

In a sign of public displeasure, the prime minister was booed last Friday (3) by the public as he arrived at Saint Paul’s Cathedral in London for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.

Under Conservative Party rules, if lawmakers want to get rid of their leader, they send a confidential letter of distrust to the chairman of the 1922 Committee, a group of bench legislators who do not hold government positions.

The process is secret – the letters are kept confidential and the president, Graham Brady, does not reveal the exact number of how many were delivered.

When 15% of Conservative lawmakers sent letters, a vote of no confidence is unleashed among all Conservative lawmakers.
