Prime Minister of Slovakia is shot

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was the target of a shooting attack this Wednesday (15) during a government meeting in Handlova, about 160 kilometers from the capital, Bratislava, according to information confirmed by the vice-president of the Parliament, Lubos Blaha, and published by the state news agency, Tasr.

An assassination attempt was carried out against Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, a Slovak Interior Ministry spokesman confirmed to Reuters by phone.

Fico was conscious when he was taken to a hospital in the city of Handlova and treated for gunshot wounds, a hospital spokesman told Reuters in an email. The shots hit the abdomen region.

The prime minister's office said Fico was at risk of dying and was transported by helicopter to the hospital.

Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová said that the alleged gunman who shot Fico was detained by the police. She said law enforcement agencies will release more information when they can and urged the public not to spread unconfirmed rumors.

Several European authorities condemned the attack on social media. Among them, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz.
