Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, the prize of discord and the thought for Lady Diana

Those who imagined them as Hollywood stars of a sort had to think again: Prince Harry And Meghan Markle They are certainly not two people who like to show off and that is also why every time they show themselves in public all the attention is on them.

It also happened on July 11 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, where they attended the ESPY Awards ceremony, prizes that are awarded every year to the athletes who have distinguished themselves the most over the past year. Presented by Serena Williamsa great friend of Markle (she was also at the former actress’s wedding with Harry) the Dukes of Sussex intervened because he received the Pat Tillman Award, for his commitment to the Invictus Games, the Olympic Games reserved for veterans that he created in 2013. An award given amid controversy, which in recent days has risked dragging Harry into yet another storm. Pat Tillman, in fact, was a football player as well as a soldier, who died in Afghanistan in 2004. Upon hearing the news of the award given to Harry, Mary Tillman, the young man’s mother, had declared that she did not agree at all with the choice.

«I’m shocked as to why they would choose such a controversial individual to receive the award. There are much more suitable recipients. There are people in the veterans community who are doing extraordinary things to assist them. These individuals do not have the money, resources, connections or privileges that Prince Harry has. I think these types of individuals should be recognized,” Mrs. Tillman had said bluntly. Words that had led to a petition to push the management of the ESPYs (run by the sports network ESPN) to reconsider the choice. Nearly 68,000 signatures were collected against the decision, with a clear motivation: «Pat Tillman He exemplified duty, honor and sacrifice. He gave up his successful NFL career to serve his country after the September 11 attacks and tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Giving this honor to someone who does not reflect the intent of the award diminishes its value and disrespects Tillman’s memory.” Pat Tillman, in fact, he turned down a contract worth nearly $3 million to join, and was killed by friendly fire, at just 27 years old.

No change of direction, however. Harry was deemed worthy due to his commitment to the Invictus and received the award for his «Tireless work in creating a positive impact for the veteran community through the power of sports.”

Accepting the award, during his acceptance speech, Harry returned to the issue, but without controversy and with words full of admiration for Mary Tillman. “Her defense of Pat’s legacy is deeply personal and I respect that,” Harry said referring to the fallen soldier’s mother. “The bond between mother and child is eternal and transcends even the greatest losses.” A sentence in which it is not difficult to read a reference to Lady Diana, and to the thread that still unites them.
