Prince Harry pays tribute to ‘Grandma’ Queen Elizabeth II

Britain’s Prince Harry on Monday paid a highly personal tribute to his “grandmother”, the late Queen Elizabeth II, saying how he treasured the time he spent with her and how he would honor his father as the new king. .

In a statement, Harry, who resigned from royal duties to his wife Meghan in 2020, praised the Queen’s service as head of state and monarch, and also spoke emotionally of her role as a grandmother.

“Grandma, although this final farewell brings us great sadness, I am eternally grateful for all our first encounters – from my earliest childhood memories with you, to meeting you for the first time as Commander-in-Chief, to the first moment you met. my dear wife and hugged her beloved great-grandchildren,” he said.

“I cherish these moments shared with you, and the many other special moments. You are already sorely missed, not just for us, but for the whole world,” he added.

He praised her “unwavering grace and dignity” and her commitment to duty, saying she was admired and respected globally.

“We also smile knowing that you and grandpa are reunited now, and both together in peace,” he said, referring to her 73-year-old husband Prince Philip, who died last year.

After he and Meghan left their official royal roles, they walked away from the family, including their father, now King Charles, and made scathing criticisms of Buckingham Palace and the way they were treated.

Since becoming king after the Queen’s death at age 96 last Thursday, Charles has expressed his love for the couple.

“As far as the first meetings are concerned, we now honor my father in his new role as King Charles III,” Harry said.

Harry and Meghan were in Britain when the Queen died only because they were coincidentally visiting to attend various charity events, a rare trip since moving to California, where they live with their two young children.

They were not expected to speak to their close relatives on the visit before the queen’s death.

On Saturday, Harry and Meghan unexpectedly showed up with their older brother William for a walk near Windsor Castle, in a show of unity that suggested their grandmother’s death could lead to a rapprochement.

A real source described this as an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time for the family.
