Now that the publication date is approaching (the book debuts in sixteen languages on January 10th) new details arrive on the poisoned barbs that the Duke of Sussex has in store for his brother and sister-in-law. According to Page Sixfor example, Harry in his tome right on William and Kate part of the blame for the global scandal which involved him in 2005when in his early twenties he came photographed at a masquerade party dressed as a Nazi (with lots of swastika on the arm). William, in a lion costume, and then-girlfriend Kate Middleton also attended the party.
In the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan the duke of Sussex returned to that episode, calling it «the worst mistake of my life». But now, in Shoot, is keen to point out that the princes of Wales were also responsible for that mistake. «I was undecided between two costumes: a pilot’s uniform or a Nazi’s» writes Harry. “So I telephoned Willy and Kate and asked for their opinion. “The Nazi uniform!” they said. AND when they saw me at the party they burst out laughing: “You are more ridiculous than Willy dressed as a lion”».
In short, Harry is convinced that his brother and sister-in-law played a decisive role in the scandal that forced him to make a public apology. A version shared by the royal biographer Robert Lacey, according to which the roots of the war between the brothers date back to that episode: “Harry chose the Nazi uniform together with his older brother, and together the two princes laughed out loud for that costume”, writes Lacey in her 2020 book Battle of Brothers – «but only Harry had to bear the brunt of the public outrage».
It must be said that the younger son of Charles III, as a boy, did not get one right. The Nazi uniform scandal was just one of many.
