Prince Harry wins compensation from British newspaper after his phone was hacked

In the United Kingdom, Prince Harry won in court this Friday (15), compensation of more than 140 thousand pounds (around 180 thousand dollars), after the monarch’s cell phone was hacked and the information was leaked by the British media. .

The prince, who became the first British monarch – in more than 130 years – to give evidence in court, sued Mirror Group Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People.

Harry and around 100 other witnesses – including actors, sports stars, celebrities and people who had some connection to public figures – took legal action over allegations of phone hacking and illegal information collection between 1991 and 2011.

Harry said he had been targeted by Mirror Group Newspapers for 15 years and that more than 140 stories that appeared in the group’s newspapers were the result of illegal information gathering. The trial, however, considered only 33 reports.

“I found that 15 of the 33 articles that were tried were the product of the hacking of his cell phone or the cell phones of his associates, or the product of other illegal information,” said Judge Timothy Fancourt.

“I consider that your phone was hacked extensively and this was probably carefully controlled by certain people at each newspaper”, adds the decision.

The judge concluded that senior newspaper executives were aware of the hacker’s operations.

“Where historic mistakes have occurred, we apologize unreservedly, take full responsibility and pay appropriate compensation,” Mirror Group Newspapers said after the ruling.
