Prince Philip has died at the age of 99

Two weeks later he was taken to St Bartholomew Hospital also in London by ambulance, where he underwent heart surgery on 3 March for a pre-existing condition. He then returned to the private hospital to continue his treatment.

After the war, Philip obtained the necessary permission from George VI to marry Elizabeth. Prior to the official announcement of their engagement, he renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles and became a British citizen, adopting his grandparents’ Mountbatten surname on his mother’s side.

After a five-month engagement, he married Elizabeth on November 20, 1947. Shortly before the wedding, the king conferred on him the title of “Royal Highness” and anointed him Duke of Edinburgh. He was demobilized when Elizabeth became queen in 1952, having previously held the rank of lieutenant. His wife named him Prince of the United Kingdom in 1957.
