Prince William has the ability to renew the monarchy, says expert

Current heir to the British throne, the prince william is the figure of the royal family with the ability to renew the monarchy, with chances that his father, the King Charles III stay in power for a short time, according to the coordinator of the International Relations course at Faap Fernanda Magnotta.

In an interview with CNN this Saturday (10), she recalled that it was even considered that Charles would not even assume the throne with the death of Elizabeth II with him resigning in favor of his son.

She characterizes William as “more popular, younger, and promises a renewal capacity for the British monarchy. Many people understood that it would be more interesting from the point of view of the longevity of this political model, but that is not what happened”.

Magnotta believes, however, that “from a long-term point of view, it will end up being inevitable that William will be king in a few years, and he will face a different challenge than Charles. William’s role will then be reconstruction, with a generational issue to face”.

The professor says that the reign of Charles III should be a transitional one, not only because of the older age at which he reaches the throne, but also “because of the very characteristic of popularity, challenges he will face”. The popularity of the new king is lower than that of Elizabeth II and William, for example.

“I would add to this image management scenario, credibility, a series of real problems”, says Magnotta. She cites in particular the economic problems in the UK linked to the exit from the European Union, the pandemic and the war in ukraine . The country currently has the highest double-digit inflation in 40 years.

There is also political instability, with four exchanges of prime ministers in six years, and international challenges, especially linked to the Commonwealth of Nations, former British colonies.

“The queen was considered a fundamental force to maintain the international alliance of these various countries around her legacy, so now many people are discussing whether there will be a great stampede”, explains the professor.

“King Charles III could resign from his mandate, and in the line of succession William would be next. He did not imply this in his speech, he promised not only to serve the country but to do so until the end of his life, which indicates that he does not intend to resign”, highlights Magnotta.

Even so, she claims that the hypothesis that the monarchy would end with the death of Elizabeth II is an exaggeration.

“It is a force that generates social cohesion in the country, a reference, a leadership that brings together a series of political leaders. But this type of model rests on a series of traditions, identity aspects that go beyond personalisms. It is important to consider the profile of whoever is at the forefront of power, but the monarchy is very rooted in this society.”
