Between wife Kate Middleton's delicate abdominal surgery and the cancer of father Charles III, these are certainly not easy days for the Prince William. Yet on February 7, when it is briefly returned to royal duties postponed due to his wife's illness, the heir to the throne revealed almost nothing of the double pain that he is living. By participating in one investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle and then at the annual London Air Ambulance fundraising gala, the Prince of Wales simply thanked the public for the “kind messages of support” which “mean a lot to us all”. That's all. And the people who met him told People that William was impeccable as always: «It's a difficult time for him, but it hasn't been talked about. Duty first and foremost,” he said Susan Taylor, who received an honor from King Charles' eldest son for his work in rugby league. William, according to a friend of the British royals interviewed by Peoplein recent public appearances «he did very well indeedconsidering that he just found out that his father has cancer and that his wife recently underwent surgery.”
In the coming weeks it is likely that William will have to replace his father Charles in many of his royal commitments. At the moment, however, the 41-year-old is enjoying a few days of restwith his wife Kate Middleton and their three children George, Charlotte and Louisto Sandringham, in Norfolk. Taking advantage of their children's half-term holidays, the Princes of Wales left Adelaide Cottage in Windsor where Kate had started her convalescence. The royal family's trip to the country estate, according to royal observers, is an excellent sign: it demonstrates that the Middleton «is recovering Well» after the “mysterious” abdominal operation he underwent last January 17 (the physical problem that led to the surgery was never made known). «Kate couldn't wait for a change of scenery and now she can relax in Norfolk while the kids let off steam with William,” an insider told the Daily Mail.
At the end of the children's school holidays, the little family will return to Windsor. And William will have to start working again. For him, given the illness of his father Carlo, according to the British press, a “soft regency” is expected. That is, the prince will be made charged with many of the functions of the fatherfrom hearings with ambassadors to the appointment of judges, but Charles will continue to ensure the sovereign's central functionssuch as the weekly meetings with the prime minister (perhaps remotely, as he did Elizabeth II during the pandemic), the monthly meeting of the Privy Council and the promulgation of laws. Royal experts, however, think that «We'll be seeing Prince William more often than usual in the coming weeks». The heir to the throne will probably be present at the Commonwealth Day ceremony on March 11 (together with Queen Camilla who will represent her husband) and perhaps we will also see him next Sunday at the most important evening for British cinema, the BAFTA ceremony: «His appearance, however, will depend on the situation at home. He will only participate if Kate's health allows it».
