Princess Diana: Her old private car sold at auction for €869,000

A Manchester resident bought Princess Diana’s old private car for €869,000 at an auction in Britain today, just days before the 25th anniversary of her death.

The original estimate for the car was £100,000. But prospective buyers from Dubai and the US engaged in a bidding war, eventually pushing the price to just under 650,000 – excluding taxes and the auction house’s percentage. And, despite bids from overseas, the 1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo will remain in Britain after the winner in this ‘battle’ is an anonymous buyer from Manchester.

The princess’s car was the highlight of the auction organized at the Silverstone circuit, 120 kilometers north-west of London, by Silverstone Auctions. This is a 130bhp sports car that was very popular in the 1980s. In the classifieds this model can be found selling for £10,000.

According to Silverstone Auctions, Diana drove the car herself when in London, although she was always accompanied by a bodyguard. Among other things, she carried her first-born son, Prince William. The vehicle is in excellent condition and has only done 40,000 km. The princess used it for three years, from 1985 to 1988, after which it changed hands several times.

In June 2021 another of Diana’s Ford Escorts, which was an engagement present, sold for £52,000 to an American collector.
