Princess Diana’s exclusive Ford Escort goes up for auction this Saturday; see photos

The exclusive black Ford Escort driven by Princess Diana in the 1980s is due to be auctioned this weekend at the Silverstone racing circuit in the UK.

One of the 130 lots put up for sale on Saturday (27), is the RS Turbo Series 1 Escort that belonged to Diana between 1985 and 1988. It is believed to be the only example of the model made in black, according to Silverstone Auctions, which that is sold for more than 100 thousand pounds (approximately R$ 600 thousand).

The RS Turbo Series 1 was usually made in white, but the royal family’s police guard asked that Diana’s be painted black “out of discretion,” auctioneers said.

For the princess to drive the vehicle, which has just under 40,000 km on it, was “a very brave choice,” Arwel Richards, a classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions, told Reuters.

“All the other members of the royal family would be driving around London in the back of an official car, while she was driving a car that you would see in a housing project outside the palace.”

Next week marks 25 years since Diana died, aged 36, when the limousine she was in as a passenger crashed in a Paris tunnel while trying to evade paparazzi.

Other lots in the auction, which run in conjunction with the Classic – a three-day motorsport festival on the Northamptonshire circuit – include a Rolls-Royce convertible that once belonged to Bee Gee Maurice Gibb.

The singer, who died in 2003, bought the black Corniche 1973 in the year 1979. With its red leather interior, the vehicle remained in the family until 2012. It is listed with a reference price of £100,000 to £115,000. BRL 600 thousand)
