Prison for Boris Becker: two and a half years for fraudulent bankruptcy

He presented himself in front of the judge with a tie green and purple, the colors of the tennis club that for over a century has organized the legendary tournament of Wimbledon. He, Boris Becker, he won that Grand Slam well three timesin 1985, 1986 and 1989. Today, thirty-three years after the last triumph, a few kilometers from those wonderful grass fields who crowned him king of the racket, Bum Bum sees open wide the doors of the prison.

In fact, at the beginning of April the Southwark Crown Court had found him guilty of 4 of the 24 offenses contested to him in process for bankruptcy declared in 2017: risked up to seven years of imprisonment, today the English court sentenced him to 30 months for fraudulent bankruptcyto be discounted for half under the semi-liberty. “On his part there was no humility”, the judge warned him, Deborah Taylor reading the sentence.

Basically, Becker would have transferred huge amounts of money from his corporate account to other accounts, he would not disclose a property in Germany and it would also have hidden bank loans and tech shares: overall, the amount withheld subject to fraudis around 2.5 million pounds, equal to three million euros at the current rate. Think that Bum Bum, in his career, he has pocketed over 25 prize money only.

A heritage that, considering sponsorships and various commitments, it was much more conspicuous, but that within a few years it has pulverized. In 2018, the finance company Smith & Wiliamson estimated a debt of approx 61 million euros, caused by a series of risky investments (above all the Becker Business Tower), by two divorces “expensive“(Especially the one with his first wife, Barbara Feltus Pabst) and a standard of living that has remained very high.

There severity of the issue emerged with greater force in the summer of 2019, when Becker put up for auction some relics of his incredible career: rackets, watches, medals, for a total of “82 objects”reported the Bild. The situation, however, has not improved and now the iconic tennis player – accompanied to court by the current partner, Lilian de Carvalho Monteiroand the 28-year-old Noahfirst of four children – has been expected for a while not simple.

At 17 he did drive the world crazy, winning Wimbledon against all odds. Today, who is 54, the news of his sentence saddens fans and enthusiastswho still see the great in the colors of that tie Bum Bum.
