Prison, in a cell pregnant with twins but there is no gynecologist

In jail and in the fifth month of pregnancy with twins but without the assistance of a gynecologist. He happens to the San Vittore prison in Milan, according to what he reports the Antigone association, committed to the protection of rights and guarantees in the penal system. The prisoner, awaiting trial, received an order pursuant to art. 285 at the institution with attenuated custody for mother prisoners). Since, as Antigone explains, the attenuated custody structure does not provide for 24-hour health coverage, we proceeded to place him in the Milan prison, where, however, there is no gynecologist. Despite the fact that there are 90 other inmates inside.

«Milan represents an anomaly in Italy»points out Valeria Verdolini, president of the Lombard branch of Antigone. “It continues to envisage sending pregnant women to prison, putting their health and that of the child at risk, precisely because the structures are not adequate for this type of care”. In fact, this story adds to the others recorded already during 2022, including a woman with a complex pregnancy who had lost her child in detention. On the case, Antigone asked for clarity.

“The Italian law”explained Patrizio Gonnella, president of Antigone, “it allows pregnant women not to enter prison and be subjected to different measures. It is a choice of civilization, which protects the health of women and children”.

However, since last May “the Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office has decided to modify its previous policy of 2016 aimed at preventing pregnant women or women with offspring under the age of one year from entering prison, subjects who in the event of criminal execution may remain there pursuant to art. 146 of the criminal code (mandatory deferment of the sentence). Today, the police forces are obliged, in the presence of an execution order, to accompany these people to prison waiting for the supervisory magistrate to take note of the conditions that prevent their permanence».

“We hope that the circular will be revoked as soon as possible”, concludes President Verdolini, “and the suspension in force since 2016 will be restored, and all forms of caution and protection at any stage of detention”.
