Four prison officers were arrested on Friday morning (20) in Salvador-BA, suspected of extortion, criminal association and corruption. They are accused of receiving payments in exchange for releasing inmates outside of authorized prison hours.
The operation called “Serious Fault” identified that the agents received benefits that varied between R$20 and R$70 per day, to facilitate overnight stays or weekends, which could increase in the case of holidays or consecutive days.
During the investigation, which lasted about two years and involved joint work between the Public Ministry of Bahia (MP-BA) and the Secretariat of Penitentiary Administration and Reintegration (Seap), it was also identified that, in order to circumvent records on the presence of inmates, the servers manipulated the inmates’ signatures, inserting the data in the attendance book in relation to the period in which they were actually outside the unit.
During the operation, carried out in several neighborhoods of the capital of Bahia, items were also seized a pistol, ammunition of different calibers, cell phones, notebooks, watches and other electronic devices. In addition to the arrests, five search and seizure warrants were served.
One of the suspects was taken to the headquarters of the Special Group to Combat Criminal Organizations and Criminal Investigations (Gaeco).
Seap Secretary José Castro reported that an administrative investigation has been opened to determine the individual conduct of each person involved. According to him, the main objective of the actions is to combat corruption and the involvement of civil servants in organized crime.
The MP-BA did not disclose details about the crimes committed, but highlighted that more than 50 prison police officers participated in the operation.
