Prisoners and criminal agents have been working since the end of last month at the Pata Molhada shelter, in Canoas (RS), in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. It is estimated that the action will benefit more than 2,000 animals.
According to the state government, the agents are employees of the kennels of the 7th and 9th Regional Penitentiary Police Stations (DPR) and have expertise in dogs. The Institution itself has several kennels in the state’s prison units, working with dogs that perform functions such as detection, prison intervention, search and capture and external guard throughout the prison system.
“We were able to help organize the materials so that the volunteers could separate them properly and also when dealing with the animals. Furthermore, prison labor was fundamental in cleaning and arranging the space, working on the construction and improvements of the shelter,” he said. the 9th DPR Kennel coordinator, Anderson Cardoso.
Tasks include cleaning, organizing and maintaining the shelter. Last Thursday (30), all dogs were transferred to a new space with more suitable facilities. Before, Pata Molhada was an improvised installation. During the transfer of the shelter’s location, prison staff and inmates dismantled the old location and separated the materials that would be reused.
