The All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) presents survey data on which methods of communication are preferred by Russians and which is the most popular messenger in Russia.

In the last 2-3 months, Russians are more likely to communicate by mobile phone, personal meetings are in third place in terms of frequency of interaction. The most unpopular ways of communication are paper and e-mails, calls on a landline phone.

The most popular messenger among Russians is WhatsApp, 73% of the respondents used it most often. The top three in-demand messengers are closed by VKontakte (38%) and Viber (26%). Telegram is most often used by 18% of Russians, more men (22% versus 15% of women) and young people aged 18 to 24.
For video calls, Russians most often choose WhatsApp (70%), Viber (20%) and Skype (13%). The least popular are video calls on Facebook, Microsoft Teams (1% each, respectively).
Interestingly, WhatsApp is so successful even after the new privacy policy scandal erupted. For example, Telegram has already reported that 100 million users joined the messenger in January. Pavel Durov called what is happening “The largest digital migration in the history of mankind.”
WhatsApp updated the policy on January 6, and also said that the new terms must be accepted by February 8 under the threat of losing access to the service. However, after receiving numerous negative feedback from users and criticism from the industry, the WhatsApp team decided to postpone the deadline for adopting the rules by 3 months – until May 15.
