“Private Desert”, by director Aly Muritiba, seeks an Oscar 2022 award

Deserto Particular, by director Aly Muritiba, will be the film that will represent Brazil and will seek an Oscar 2022 award. The announcement was made in October, by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts.

For Aly, the choice is made much more by criteria of economic power, influence in the industry, than quality. “I have no idea if we have a chance of winning an award. It’s not enough just to have a good movie”, he says.

Chosen among 15 feature films, the film will be sent to the Hollywood Film Academy, which will evaluate which films will compete for the category of Best Foreign Film.

Pedro Fasanaro, the main actor in the film, says that the opportunity has “awakened a great euphoria”. “It’s been busy, very exciting. This is necessary for us to look at our country with more optimism”, he says.

Brazil has not been nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film since 1999, when the film Central do Brasil competed in this category and for Best Actress, with Fernanda Montenegro.

Hollywood Brazilian FilmFest director Talize Sayegh says that the country lacks investment. “We need to unite as a voice, and we do that by going to see Brazilian cinema in the first week. We need the support of producers, the Federal Government.

Deserto Particular begins in the city of Curitiba and tells the story of a former police officer, Daniel. After ending his own career, he decides to go to the Bahian sertão to look for a woman with whom he has a virtual relationship.
