Private investments in Pro Trilhos reach R$ 150 billion, says ministry

The Pro Trilhos program, which encourages the expansion of the national rail network, received five new orders this Wednesday (1) from the logistics company MRS, informed the Ministry of Infrastructure. With the new proposals, private investments in the program are projected at R$ 150 billion.

The company, which operates in the sector as a concessionaire – managing 1,643 kilometers in the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo – has become the company that has requested the most stretches from the Federal Government so far.

MRS’ requests were:

  • Três Lagoas (MS) to Panorama (SP) – 100 km long for the transport of pulp;
  • Unaí to Pirapora (MG) – 302 km of new tracks for grain transport;
  • Varginha to Andrelândia (MG) – 143 km for coffee transport;
  • Ouro Preto to Conceição do Mato Dentro (MG) – a 213 km long segment for the transport of iron ore and steel products;
  • Rio Sobre to Belo Horizonte (MG) – 42 km stretch for the transport of iron ore.

There are already 36 applications submitted by those interested in building and operating the railways, which include 11,142 kilometers of new tracks in 14 units of the federation. The proposals were sent from 20 different private entities, 16 of which were newcomers in the rail transport segment. Of the total, seven establish new accesses to the country’s ports.

All requests are filed with the Ministry of Infrastructure and analyzed by the SNTT (National Secretariat for Land Transport) and ANTT (National Land Transport Agency) team, which has already approved five projects and is expected to analyze four more until this Thursday (2 ).

After ANTT’s approval, SNTT checks whether the proposal is in accordance with national transport and railway sector policies. If so, authorization can be granted. However, there is no deadline for the assessment to be completed by the bodies.
